Overview of the recent definitions and terminology for acute gastrointestinal injury, intra-abdominal hypertension and the abdominal compartment syndrome

This paper summarizes the latest definitions and terminology on acute gastrointestinal injury, intra-abdominal hypertension and the abdominal compartment syndrome in the intensive care unit patients as published recently by the Working Group on Abdominal Problems (WGAP) of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) and the World Society on Abdominal Compartment Syndrome (WSACS). The uniformity created is a great step forward for the evaluation of gastrointestinal function and abdominal hypertension in the critically ill and should assist in further research.

Ce document résume les dernières définitions et la terminologie sur la défaillance aiguë gastro-intestinale, l’hypertension intra-abdominale et le syndrome du compartiment abdominal chez les patients de réanimation, tel que publiées récemment par le groupe de travail sur les problèmes abdominaux (WGAP) de l’European Society of intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) et la Société mondiale du syndrome du compartiment abdominal (WSACS). Ces définitions consensuelles sont une avancée majeure en matière de normalisation et constituent une bonne base pour la recherche future. L’uniformité créée est un grand pas en avant pour l’évaluation de la fonction gastro-intestinale et l’hypertension abdominale chez les personnes gravement malades.
